PostSubject: Agnosticism   Wed Mar 10, 2010 5:23 am

I'm an Agnostic, which is
Quote :
a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.
Basically, we're the one's who just don't know.

I believe that there is a god(s) or some higher power, but I think it's beyond human recognition. I used to be Christian, but I found that a lot of the stuff they tell you doesn't add up...so...

Anyways, this is where you can discuss anything to do with Agnosticism, and if you're one of us, why did you go with this option?

I prefer Agnostic people than atheists, and it is because most of them are open minded to all the possibilities of the existence of god(s) or God unlike the majority of atheist people.

Anyway, can you tell me Rain what are those things that you think doesn't add up?

Yeah, if I can remember them. I can't always remember everything.

Alright I'll start with an example. There was an artifact that the Church has, it has an imprint of a person on it, and on the opposite side is the reverse copy (think one side=white, other=black). They let scientists take a look at it (they were claiming it was the shroud of Jesus) and science proved that it wasn't from the right time period. The Church went Crazy Nuts and won't let anyone look at it, because it contradicts what they are telling people.

Also, I don't agree with a lot of the stuff that's in the Bible. I know there's a lot of stuff that got left out of the Bible because it's against what the Church is trying to force people to believe.

Oh, I think I've seen that shroud. Actually, I saw it on national Geographic. It was interesting though. But I did not know that the church acts like that. I mean, it's up to people to believe it or not. Though, if you ask me, I do believe what the scientists said about it. Who knows? Maybe an old group of people in the past just like to fool us all. I mean, it's about 2000 years old! if there is a shroud to be found, it would be like pieces of cloth.

Yeah, they have no idea how the image got put on the shroud. It defies all logic of science today. And yeah, most people don't know what the Church does, which is why so many of them are duped.

I don't really get the difference between Agnostics and Atheists. Care to give me some pointers on it?

Atheists believe there is no god. Agnostics believe there is something out there, some god(s)/goddess(es). That simplify it?

But you don't give names to those gods/goddess? You don't worship them or anything?

I don't. From my understanding of the rest of "us," no one does those things. Why would we if we don't truly know? It'd be rather idiotic.

I personally just live my life. I mean, whatever is "up there" (so to speak) is there. They/it has given me my cards, and now it's my turn to deal them as I can. If that makes any sense.

What did not add up Rain. I am Curious to see why you left being Christian.
This is asking you why you went to your current beliefs.

Sure it does. To be honest I don't think even the atheists don't fully reject the concept. As far they are concerned, they don't take anything unless there is a proof of it, but it would be really ridiculous for them to think that today's science has explained everything because it really doesn't. Maybe after some centuries.

But I get your point. Thin line between you agnostics and us atheists me thinks...

Oh yeah, very thin. It may be thinner than the line between Genius and Insanity actually...

Mmm....

Me no know. But I've been around just about every major religion, read their major writings, listened to different preachers of the religions, etc. I can't say I can buy into any of them, period.

If I had to take a guess, it'd be Catholic Christianity....is that still too broad for what you were asking Spence?

Not really, but Catholiscism isn't Christianity...its Catholiscism. similiar, but with big differances. Most Catholics are very un-religous people as well.

I would be exceedingly loathe to state that the two, ie catholisim and christianity are mutually exclusive.

but lets get back to the main differences between agnosticism and atheisim.

athesism in essense is - no God. the word derives from a-theos so no God as we know it or dont know it. That is there is no ultimate cause of any discription whereas Agnostics tend to the anti-theism stance.

which generally gets translated into anti-christo-judaeism. ie: we are not anti the idea of an ultimate cause - we just are not gonna accept your take on the matter. or any organised religious veiwpoint.

Well, well....

Seems like Radical here hit the pin on the head. That's basically the best way for me personally to explain it in simple grounds.

And Spence, I don't know if I was Catholic then or what, all I know is that I was something that I thought was a part of Christianity.

Lol, yeah, that'd do it.

If you don't mind me asking, what belief are you?

Belief? or denomination? what theology do I hold like pre-mill or dispensational?

The church I am currently attending is a part of the NZBU which by its very nature is considered protenstant, Pre-mill and pretty much dispy.

However I am undecided on a lot of those core issues.

One of the courses I am doing at the moment is completely doing away with calvinism vs armimism. - I agree with a lot of the thoughts I being exposed to although they do skate pretty close to heresy.

when I find a few minutes I'll discuss it in depth
