Okay well I was surprised that there is not a topic on this less famous book but just as good as the Lord of the Rings books. the Hobbit is my Favorite book that Tolkien wrote I tried the Lord of the Rings but I had watched the movies first and they did them so well that I was bored by the books because they had practically used the book for the script so it was like I had aready read them.

So discuss this book about Bilbo Baggins and the untimely demise of the misunderstood Dragon Smaug. Talking

I don't know about that. Loads of parts like Old Forest and Tom Bombadil weren't in the movies at all.

I really liked the Hobbit though. It's like a children's fairytale except for some reason older people really enjoy it, and of course there's a nice big battle at the end with lots of casualties, just to keep it interesting and realistic.

I did forget about Tom Bombadil that I did forget thankyou for reminding me.

I felt sorry for dear old Smaug he was just living by the rule of finders keepers. Laughing

*laughs*

Well, you must admit, he was a conceited little dragon...

Actually, I'm not sure if you guys know this, but Smaug was based off of the dragon from Beowulf. Little known fact, but true.

Meh, No I did not know that Rain, Thanks for sharing that little part of you vast knowledge.

Am I one of the few who actually liked Smaug?

Though I must admit that shot from Bard Was heroic , Three Cheers for the Black arrow!

I thought 'The Hobbit' was too childish. I barely managed to read it somehow. Had to force the book in front of my eyes to be honest. I've joked around that while 'LOTR' is for children, 'The Hobbit' is for unborn babies. Just my worthless opinion, so don't get all riled about it... Razz

the hobbit is written for kids. LOTR was written for hsi son chrisrtopher who was away at war - so aimed a little older.

I like the hobbit - I think there is a heap left unexplored in the later books that would have been neat to look at - the beornings for example.

smaug was smug!

Even though it is aimed at a younger audience, there are references to things like Gondolin, a location known only to readers of the far more mature and complicated Silmarillion.

Oh, yes. There are a lot of small things that are slipped into The Hobbit about the bigger series and the hidden Silmarillion book that garners such frustrations from its readers.
