Sword of the Stars: The Cabin Boy

Main Character: Jake Li MacDonare (Korean/Irish ancestry) Age 15, height 5’ 5” , black-brown hair, green-grey eyes

Current location and date: Epsilon Eridani muster and proving grounds, near gas giant XC-378Alpha, ect 1230

Chapter 1: Cabin Boy

Jake ran along the corridor of the Solforce cruiser SFS James Bowie, dodging the odd officer or ensign he passed, in a rush to get to the bridge. As cabin boy of the cruiser at age 15, he wanted to make a good impression every time he could. He reached the airlock to the command section, and opened, and stepped onto the bridge. He gazed out through the red plasteel at the expanse of stars that lay before the ship.

“Mr. Jake!! Stop woolgathering and come here! ,” the captain, a Mr. Edward Churchill, called out. Jake silently cursed at himself for being so foolish, but he just couldn’t help it. The sight was extremely invigorating, knowing that there were so many stars, many of them with worlds waiting to be explored. He lowered his head and walked to the captain’s chair.

“Jake, son, I understand how you feel, but you’ll have plenty of time to look out the window at a later date. For now, I need you on the comm. You still need your schooling, and I intend that you should get it. Now, sir!” Jake snapped to attention and went to the comm., put the headset over his ears, while stating a curt, “Aye, captain!” he sat down in the hard metal chair. “Jake signing in. Alpha, theta, gamma, zebra, X-ray,” he said into the set, and the screen before him flashed into life, and he began sifting through the multitude of radio and subspace chatter searching for messages meant for his vessel. The AI of the vessel helped get rid of some of the less important chatter, but the AI could still only do so much.

It wasn’t long before a message came through.

“Captain! Orders from Solforce Command! Destination: Dorsai III! Accompanying vessels: SFS MDV Roger Young and our two sisters.”, Jake called out. The two sisters were the James Bowie’s sister ships, same type of ship and made at the same time in the same dock. The SFSDE William de Bastard and the SFSDE Benjamin Franklin, ships of the Hermes’s Sandals MKIVX class and made in Epsilon Eridani Orbital Yard. This was to be their first real mission, and they were heading to a planet nobody to date had explored, at over 20 lightyears away, and relatively isolated from this sector, with only one detectable nodeline in all of Solforce’s territory.

Jake then received their departure orders. “Captain. We are to consider the Roger Young as the command vessel, and we are to be at the Dorsai III node in twenty-two minutes.” “Thank you, Mr. Jake. Helm. Micro-jump past Oceanus and Mercury-dool to within 5 minutes max speed to the node.” “Aye sir!” The helmsman hit a small switch and spoke in some obscure helmsman’s dialect to the onboard AI, and the computer beeped an affirmative.
A whining hum sounded from aft, and the captain said, “Node shields down!” Almost instantaneously, black plasteel shutters came down on the inside of the viewport, and the humming grew louder. “Jump!” the helmsman announced, and Jake felt one of the strangest feelings he had ever felt. Jake described it in his later years in a pub over Muur as “Feeling like you’re being watched, by something not hostile, but not friendly either. It also feels like you’re free, but wrapped in duct tape and covered in cement at the same time, while being shocked with intense electricity, on some ice planet, but still acutely aware of your surroundings.” Jake looked around and saw everyone sitting in their chairs calmly. Of course, these were all seasoned veterans from a cruiser, and most newbies like him were aft in isolation.

The humming ceased, and the craft lurched to a rough stop. “Jump field deactivated! Safe!” The captain then ordered “Node shields up!” The black plasteel was then replaced by transparent red plasteel. “Interstellar node sensors! On!” In front of them, the red plasteel turned into a massive HUD display, with a large black sphere with a glowing blue circle in the center off in the distance. “All sensors online! Our sisters are here!” Just as the sensor jockey announced the arrival of the William de Bastard and Benjamin Franklin, a bright light appeared and the two vessels exited some two kilometers away in golden white webs of energy, that disappeared almost immediately. Jake suddenly was overwhelmed by radio chatter. “What ho, Jim Cut-throat!” “Where are those marine slackjaws?” “How the hell do you think we know where that canicula of a marine vessel is?” And much more. After a few seconds of this, the captain said, “you fellas should know well enough by now the old military doctrine from the histories. Life in the military is all rush-rush and then wait-wait.” “Yeah, we know that. But it’s bloody annoying when you are testing out new ships!” “Ah… go suck an egg, Priest. No need to quote military doctrine to me. My father’s father and eleven fathers before that were all soldiers!” “Really?,” the captain asked. “So you’re number thirteen? Bad luck that!? “Shut up, Priest! Or I’ll paint ya!” The Benjamin Franklin then turned and backed up slowly towards the Bowie. The fusion plasma jets loomed ominously. Jake looked at the captain, and mouthed, “What’s goin’ on?”

“Really, Pierce, you should have learned by now.” The captain nodded to the gunnery sergeant, who smirked, and the port gauss stormer aimed and shot loose ten rounds of ammo, sweeping across the rear of the Franklin, and two rounds hit the plasma jets, the others ricocheting away or missing. Sparks and pieces of metal flew away from the engines of the Franklin. The Franklin was thrown like a ragdoll.

“All right, Priest, you win as usual.” The other captain grumbled. The ship righted itself and two drones emerged from the ring and fixed the

It was another 3 long minutes until the Roger Young jumped in. The captain of the Roger Young said,“All right, vacuum peddlers, let’s get this show on the road.” The captain of the William de Bastard called back, “And just what do you mean by that, you loafers?? While you people work 30 minutes for every 90 days of laying around, we are out there clearing out pathways for you!” “But who cleans up the mess?,” was the retort. All the vessels turned and headed for the Dorsai III node. And they disappeared for the next few weeks, the only physical evidence of them being gravitational disturbances along the nodeline.

Chapter 2 A feast for the crows

Three weeks later, the vessels jumped out of nodespace and lined up in standard first contact formation. The lots were drawn for who would scan, and the de Bastard lost.

After two minutes of it pivoting back and forth, the captain reported to the other vessels an all clear, save for a small, unidentified artificial, hollow satellite not 6,000 kilometers away. “All ships microjump and my order,” the captain of the Roger Young called out. “Jump to within 5 kilometers of it. We’d best find out what it is and neutralize it if it is hostile, like such things usually are.”

The vessels microjumped, and the Bowie’s captain said, “Sweet mother of Jesus…” Before them lay a deep purple-black satellite with blinking lights, and some areas seemed torn open from centuries of wear. Surrounding it were cruisers of unkown design and a destroyer with some fan-like energy display. The cruisers turned and charged straight forward, releasing smaller craft that struck like hornets, and other craft that looked like boarding pods. The pods hit the Roger Young and the Bowie and drilled into the hull.

*************

Jake was shaken out of his berth by an impact. He fell out, almost naked, onto the floor. “All crew members, no matter what condition, are to grab arms and repel boarders!,” the captain’s voice barked over the SC. “First contact situation! Attempt to force back, not kill!” Jake went to the weapons locker, shoved his way through the 8 men crowded there, grabbed a chain of grenades and a slug pistol.

H ran out into the corridor, and ran to towards the bridge. He heard sounds of hand to hand combat not far ahead, and the dying screams of men, and the sounds of strange creatures and weapons. He ran ahead, found a hatch burrowed through the ship hull, and 8 limbed serpentine creatures in some kind of armor fighting multiple sailors.

Jake aimed at a bulge in the back of one of the creatures’ suits, where the feathered wings met the body. The slug bounced off of the armor, but the creature lurched forward and disembowled a sailor with a trident-like weapon. Several small robots flew out of the pod’s hatch and took the place of the creature. The creature stalked toward Jake, and stuck it’s long neck out and hissed some incomprehensible, Grecian-Orient-like language, and leaped. Jake stumbled, and shot the creature until he ran out of ammo. The creature kept coming.

Jake rolled past it, but tripped over it’s tail, and fell near another one of the creatures. This new creature, which seemed to be an officer or these creatures’ equivalent, due to it’s unique armor coloring and the gold filigree on it’s feather plume, leaned over and sprayed a gas in Jake’s face from a hole on a small bulge underneath it’s armored beak, and everything in Jake’s world went dark.
*********

Deep in space, near a red-swirled gas giant, the Roger Young, Benjamin Franklin, James Bowie, and William de Bastard detonated in four massive fireballs, while small dark shapes docked with massive blade-like ships reminiscent of crows, with a glowing blue aura behind them. The crow-ships left the system encased in green spheres of energy.

Well... you can get the games at Amazon or Gamespot or any other gamesite. You can order the official fiction, The Deacon's Tale, at Amazon.

And you can get canon info at the Sword of the Stars Forums or Sword of the Stars Wiki.

Chapter 3: Curiosity

Location: Morrigi Science station, Minbarr II system, etc 0800

Jake woke up with a bright violet light shining down on his body, on a cold table, with several serpentine creatures poking and prodding his immobilized body. One of the creatures held up a strange device and placed it over Jake’s body and looked at something beyond Jake’s sight. Jake strained his neck trying to see, but the creature noticed it, and placed a clawed talon on Jake’s head, said something in a strange, reedy, rough voice, and forced his head up again. Jake tried moving his arms to slap the creature away, but his arms were restrained by black cloth straps that seemed to meld into the table.

Eventually, the creatures left the room, and Jake’s restraints melded into the table. He Sat up, and was amazed to see some cloth on a pedestal near what looked like a couch. He held up the cloth, and was surprised to see a tunic and robe of a silk-like material like the clothing from various movies of Earth’s history. He slipped the clothes on, and sat on the couch. He looked around, and saw an articulated pillar with what seemed like handholds and footholds in various positions all over it, and it looked like it hard been craved from a tree. Where am I, Jake thought. What are these creatures and what do they want with me? Did they kill the captain and all the others, too?

He eventually stopped wondering these points and lay down on the “couch”. He drifted off to sleep as the violet light dimmed. He started awake as the door hissed open, and three of the creatures walked in. One looked at Jake and did what Jake thought to be an approving gesture, and the creature motioned to one of the others, who bore a large tray with various foodstuffs. The one who bore the foddstuffs placed them down on the pedestal, and brought up a schematic of the human body with a large amount of strange writing scrolling down one side. The third male walked forward and placed several fruits and what looked a haunch off of some strange animal on a separate plate, along with a knife. The creature then walked towards an area on the wall, and pressed an obscure button, and what looked like a washing station appeared. The creature briefly demonstrated how to use the various apparatus in the washing station. The trio then turned to leave.
Jake leaped up and headed for the door, but one of the three shouted something that sounded similar to the Latin word for fast. “Velais!” A drone appeared and shot out an arc of energy that knocked Jake backwards. The larger of the three creatures lowered it’s head as if in shame, and pressed a small glowing blue circle on it’s gauntlet, and spoke in it’s own language, which was quickly translated into a primitive form of English. “Ye would be better not trying such fruitless endeavors. The current-one-with-most-worthiness-to-lead-people is very curious as to how your people have changed and is curious. Ye would be best to eat something.” The creature motioned to the food, and Jake, subdued by both the shock and the creature’s manner, turned and sat down on the couch near the pedestal and began to eat. The creatures lingered for a while, and left.
