PostSubject: The battle for Thedas   Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:35 pm

Now, I was working with another idea. Which I'll put up when the 8K Rpg is finished, which I hope will be soon, as there aren't that much more to add too it. Anyway, I give you: This

***

The continent of Thedas is a land of diversity. Incredible beauty and unimaginable horror. Populated by mainly by humans. Organised into the Countries of the Anderfels, Antiva, The Free Marches, Ferelden, Nevarra, Orlais, Rivain and the Tevinter imperium. All located on the mainland.

The dominating religion here is The Chantry. They have wide influence in every country except for the Tevinter imperium which has its own Chantry headed by the black divine, as opposed to the white divine in Orlais. Rivain rejects the Chantry entirely. Many of it's citizens following the Qun or in the Natural order.

North on the islands of Par Vollen and Seheron live the Qunari. A people of tall, horned, stoic, bronze skinned people. Convinced that all should follow the Qun. Their writings, which determine the life of every Qunari. Constantly at war with the Tevinter imperium for control of the north.

The Dwarves once ruled a enormous underground empire. The first blight ended this. And only Orzammar and Kal-Sharok still stand. In the last years luck has smiled on the dwarves. The Paragon Harald have found a cure for the Dwarven growing infertility. And a few old Thaigs have been reclaimed as the Castless has been allowed to become warriors.

Lastly there are the elves. Once they ruled all of Thedas. But their empire fell when the humans arrived. They were enslaved. And though they have been released long ago they are still considered second class citizens. They are divided into two groups.
The city elves, living in slums in human cities called alienages. Elvencommunities, surrounded by high walls. Which eighter protects them, or keeps them in. Depending on the person who looks.
And there are the Dalish elves. After the last land of the elves fell, some chose not to bow to human rule. Now centuries later they wander the remote lands in clans. Trying to reclaim their lost culture. Humans often fear them. But it is not unheard of for Dalish to trade with humans. Still, there is much tension between them.

***

In 10.98 Victory the sixth blight was released on the world. It hit Orlais hard. By 11.03 Iron, only Val Royeaux and Halamshiral, the old elven capital were still holding their own. Both under siege by Darkspawn hordes. Nevarra was next, and the free marches followed. Only the best defended cities managed to keep the massive hordes at bay. The Chantry sent their templars to battle the horde. But lost the battle of the Blasted hills. Which all but destroyed the order of Templars. Even the legendary Grey Wardens fell back in front of the horde.

The only ones who are holding out well are the Dwarves. As all the Darkspawn have been drawn to the surface they have managed to reclaim many lost Thaigs. But even the Dwarves know that when the horde have taken the surface, it will come back. And then they will not hold. Not this time.

Worse still. The Tevinter Imperium
refused to send help. Hoping to strengthen itself while its rivals
are weakened. The Qunari are thus forced to continue their war with
Tevinter, instead of sending forces to battle the blight. They could
only sent some of their men to join the Grey Warden ranks.

***

Now it is 11.12 Iron. The sixth blight has gone on for 14 years. And threaten to destroy all of civilization. Never has the horde been larger and the situation more dire.

However, there is hope.

A group of Grey Wardens from all over Thedas have gathered in Kirkwall. A legendary figure, known as the Architect has been spotted. With his own personal horde of Darkspawn. He may be the key to find the Archdemon and discover what the secret behind the blight is. His Horde may also help defeat the seemingly infinite Darkspawn horde. The group must find him, and discover how to end this terrible blight. Or else Thedas is doomed.

***

Other essential things to know:

The circle of magi:

The major organisation for the training of mages. Every human land in Thedas, except for Rivain and Tevinter has a circle. Mages that are not part of the circle are deemed apostate by the Chantry. And hunted down by the Templars. Dalish mages are therefore forced to hide their powers from humans.

The fade:

The realm of spirits and demons. It is ever changing. Humans and elves go to the fade when they dream. But only mages can stay conscious in the fade. Dwarves do not go to the fade when they dream. Demons will always try to cross over from the fade to the mortal world. And when they succeed in crossing the veil an abomination is created.

The Free Marches: A large area consisting of city states. They are highly independent and heavily populated.

Lyrium:

The “Lifeblood” of the world. This substance is extremely useful as lyrium is needed to enter the fade and a whole range of other things. It is also extremely dangerous. Mages will die if they come in contact with lyrium. And other humans and elves will go mad as an effect. Only Dwarves are partially immune. All Templars are addicted to lyrium. The Chantry control all Lyrium trade, and all lyrium is produced by the dwarves.

Grey Wardens:

The Grey Wardens are an order of elite fighters. Sworn to battle the Darkspawn at all costs. They go trough a ritual called the joining. In which they drink Darkspawn blood mixed with lyrium and blood from an Archdemon. This grants them powers to sense the Darkspawn, and the abillity to truly kill the Archdemon. It also limits their lifespan. After the joining a Grey Warden have approximately 30 years left to live. This is of course kept a secret by the Wardens. The Warden have the right of conscription. They may take any individual, from peasant to king to join their ranks. They only take those deemed worthy.

Darkspawn: Many stories and origins are given to the Darkspawn. If they are not lead by an archdemon, a corrupted old god in the form of a dragon. They dwell underground. Durring a blight they will swarm the land and try destroy everything in their path. Darkspawn taint the land itself. Any living creature that consumes their blood become ghouls. And will die after only months.

Demons: Many different Demons exist.
They constantly try to cross into the world of the living. When they do they will try and possess something living, or formerly living. The weaker demons often possess corpses, while the more powerful ones will go for living targets. When they encounter mages in the fade they will try to possess they. Eighter trough force or by making a deal. Templars hunt demons.

From left to right. Qunari, Human, Elf, Dwarf

***

Classes:

Mage: Controls magic. They often use staffs to focus their magic. Some can shapechange although the circle mages are not though how to. Some mages are Blood mages and these are hunted by the Templars.

Warriors: They focus on melee combat. These men and women often fight with the heavier weapons like maces, swords and axes. Some however, rely on dual weapons and such.

Rogues: These fight in unconventional ways or with bows. They are often Assassins or thiefs but not always so. They cover a wide range of fighting styles and roles.

Roles:

The Architect: Hotshot
Grey warden commander(1) Rain Stinks
Grey Warden Mages(3), DareDevil
Grey warden Warriors(3), Starscream, Lone Wolf
Grey warden Rogues(3), Pathfinder

Will add more roles if needed.

Great. I'll wait a day or so before putting character sheet up. I'm hoping for at least two more to join. To take the possition as Grey warden commander and such.

*chuckles*
Then we've got a nice interesting piece set up before we even start. I just like the sound of being a Dalish elf.

Right. I'll put the Character sheet topic up when I've finished my own. If we don't get somebody to take Warden commander before the RPG starts I'll take that as well.

Command the group, and all the Grey Warden forces of a certain nation (Ferelden or the free marches in this case). He or she is also often the senior Warden, and therefore the most experienced. And also closest to his/her calling, which could be intresting too see in an RPG. He or she can also use the right of conscription to recruit new Wardens and also preform the Joining.

Well, in that case...

If no one takes it, I'll step up and switch to that. So long as I can still be a Dalish Elf Mage :D

Indeed. They are both fun roles to play. And I'm sure you'll do just fine. It's no harder then any other RPG type. It's just like high fantasy, with all the good bits of dark fantasy added in. Smile

Oh, and feel free to add additional ideas for the plot any time. That's what these threads are for after all. Discussing how to make the RPG better and more interesting along the way.

I guess I'll be a mage then, but no idea on class or anything just yet.

Plot ideas, however, I can work on. But since this is supposed to be, I think, like a "high fantasy," we should definitely have, like, killer epic battles. You know what I mean? Like, huge faction wars? Lots of battles, from what I can gather, would be needed.

Indeed. As I said, the best of dark fantasy and high fantasy mixed together. Makes for something awesome. If done right.
